The first Bayonne Montmartre market took place in 1996 thanks to an idea of the association "L'amicale Porte d'Espagne". Its aim was to create special days of colour and atmosphere with open air cafes and conviviality between the artists and the strolling public.

For more than five centuries, the Bayonne Ham Fair has been the rendez-vous of conviviality and exchanges. It is a festival for the gourmets and always in the tradition of authentic regional produce.
Note that this year for the first time, the traditional Saturday morning market will take place on the other side of the river, on the square, "Mail Chaho-Pelletier". The omelette and ham competition will also be held there.

"CHOCOLATE DAYS" May 14th and 15th in the town centre
Bayonne is historically the chocolate capital of France and celebrates this tradition every year during the Ascension weekend in May.
The dipping of the chocolate centres into their delicious coating takes place in the streets and the public is invited to partake of these delicacies prepared by master artisans.
Various activities and guided visits are proposed in the streets and in front of the chocolate shops throughout the weekend.

As with every year, the 20th edition of the medieval market will take place on July 12th, 13th and 14th.
This year the event will be back its original site on the place Montaut square.
For three days troubadours, magicians, soldiers and ......gargoyles will take over the heart of the town!

From Wednesday, July the 28th to Sundays August 1st, 2010.
Throughout the years a number of activities have been added to a growing list of traditions link to the festival.
Main attractions such as running the heifers in the place Saint Andre square, in the heart of the Petit Bayonne quarter, have always been a major source of enjoyment. The "Corso lumineux", the evening parade of decorated floats regularly attracts more than 350,000 spectators, delighting generations of youngsters.
For five days Bayonne swings in mass jubilation to the rythme and the sound of the "Bandas" and traditional groups and under the benevolent eye of "king Léon" the patron saint of the Festival.

Bayonne is the oldest bullfighting town in France and is proud of its tradition. The arena is the biggest in the south-west of France and receives the most famous names of the bullfighting world.
Every season they confront bulls from the best breeders, on the sand of this mythical arena.
