
A descendant of the ancient hand-ball game, Basque Pelota is played by everybody, throughout the villages, and of course, in Bayonna.
Bayonne is proud to be home to the oldest Basque pelota playing hall (“trinquet”). The Saint André Trinquet, listed as a historic monument, hosted the most important players for the last three centuries. It is said that during his wedding in the Basque Country, Louis XIV came and played pelota here.

Basque pelota is of utmost importance in local culture and takes its name from the people who originated the game. From the oldest playing hall to the most modern, built just outside the town centre, Bayonne offers top-class sites to play Pelota. It is the headquarter of the French Basque Pelota federation. Every year, the Pelota Master Cup takes place, and the the world’s best players come to play… The town regularly host the world Cup in trinquet.
